Decision guide
Tile vs. luxury vinyl plank for bathroom floors
LVP has gotten very good, and it installs faster and costs less than tile. But bathrooms are wet rooms, and the two materials handle moisture differently. Here's how to decide.
Side by side
| Tile | Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost installed | $8–$18 per sq ft | $5–$12 per sq ft |
| Water resistance | 100% waterproof if grout is sealed | Water-resistant; seams can admit moisture over time |
| Durability | 20–30 years with proper install | 10–20 years |
| Comfort underfoot | Hard and cold (radiant heat helps) | Warmer, slight give underfoot |
| Install time | Longer — mortar set plus cure time | Faster floating install |
Contractor's perspective
Our honest take
Tile in the wet zone — always. For the floor outside the wet zone in a budget bath remodel, LVP is a reasonable call that holds up fine with normal use. For a primary bath where you're already spending money, tile throughout is our default. The extra cost is small at that point and you'll never regret it.
Choose Tile when
Wet zone (shower surrounds, around the tub), long-term ownership, primary bathroom, or you want the most durable option.
Choose Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) when
Budget-conscious remodel, faster timeline, bathroom floor outside the wet zone, or you prefer the warmer feel underfoot.
